douglasstomDeCarlo had been a professional boxer. Now he was fighting the battle of addiction. He was staying at the Rescue Mission and coming to our church for services and Celebrate Recovery. In our small group, DeCarlo shared that he had been thinking about trusting in Christ, but felt he still needed to stop doing some things that he was doing. I shared that he needed to trust Christ first – then Christ would help him deal with those things. His eyes lit up as he said, “Oh, I get it, I’ve been trying to do the wrong thing first.” Then he said, “My mother is a Christian, and she has been praying for me for a long time. I think it would make her happy if I called her and told her I was thinking about trusting in Christ.” I said, “If you really want to make your mother happy, you should trust in Christ, and then tell her that you DID trust in Christ.” He said, “YOU’RE RIGHT, I was going about things backwards again – OK, I’m ready, let’s do it!” And so he did. That night DeCarlo became a new creation in Christ. The following Sunday he shared his testimony in church, andTuesday at Celebrate he shared that God had set him free from his addiction. He’s still growing, but God is doing a great work in his life. You can see it in his big smile.
