While home for a few days I came across a song by Fernando Ortega titled “Traveler.” It is a fitting theme song for myself and all the Village Missionary District Representatives. Look it up and listen if you have a few minutes. The lyrics are below:

Traveler

Neon lights flickering outside the cafe
Ice on the windshield
Stars in a black sea
On a winter road
Flurries of snow
I’m ready to go

Past farmhouse and pasture our voices together
Rise to the drumming
Of big-rigs and trailers
Long hours til daylight
A rumbling bus
Our bed and our board

Heavenly Father
Remember the traveler
Bring us safely home
Heavenly Father
Remember the traveler
Bring us safely home
Safely home

In the towns off this highway the people are kind
They welcome us in
I sing in their church halls
Old hymns and prayer songs
With lifted hearts
We rejoice in the Lord

Heavenly Father
Remember the traveler
Bring us safely home
Heavenly Father
Remember the traveler
Bring us safely home
Safely home

I long for my family and friends to remind me
Of where I have been
And where I am going
And where I come from

Heavenly Father
Remember the traveler
Bring us safely home
Heavenly Father
Remember the traveler
Bring us safely home
Safely home

God Brings District Representatives Safely Home

As I think of the chorus it reminds me of how we begin each trip in prayer for safety on the road as we travel to and between rural country churches – ministering help and hope to country pastors and the church families they serve. Each District Representative can recount the close calls on the road when God brought them to their destinations and then safely home. There are no doubt countless times when God protected us from mishaps on the road we are not aware, and He brought us safely home.

Like the songwriter, we travel through small towns and down highways and rural roads in all kinds of weather so we can minister to others. Each one serving as a District Representative has ministered as a Missionary/Pastor of a church family that was in the country, a crossroad community or small town. Now, we serve as pastors to the missionary/pastors in our districts. When there is a need, we are ready to go and offer words of encouragement or exhortation, to share resources for ministry, and at times, bring a challenge. It may be to share on hospitality, how to begin a children’s club, write a church constitution, or drafting a vision statement.

The scenery in each Village Missions district looks different, from seashores to mountains, from plains to bluffs, and forests to prairies, but in every area we go, Village Missionaries serve people. They are why we leave our family and friends – to walk alongside them as they serve in rural and small-town church congregations.

Looking Forward

Yet, it is part of the ministry of a District Representative to look forward to where we are going next, looking for the next country church that needs help, meeting the next couple that desires to serve a rural church, the next words of encouragement the Missionary/Pastor needs to hear. It is a care-giving ministry for which each of us were once recipients and were thankful for our own District Representatives.

As we travel, we pray for each Village Missionary, church board, applicant, college, and colleagues. In this, we ask each of you to join us in prayer before our great God and Savior. Pray for us personally and collectively, and for those with whom we minister in rural churches across our great country.
