La Pine sits in the heart of “Newberry Country,” with numerous volcanoes at our doorstep–such as the 3 Sisters, Mt. Bachelor and the Newberry Caldera. The timber industry used to be the dominant economic force in this area, but it is slowly being replaced by tourism. Skiing, hiking, camping, fishing and off-road activities abound in Central Oregon. One in seven residents are military veterans — most of them Vietnam-era vets. This is reflected in our congregation as well. I (Don) minister to many of them through a local veterans outreach group, and Gaylene ministers to their wives too. Unemployment is high, around 18%, with alcohol and drug abuse being the primary cause of broken homes.
Pray for us as we minister to kids and parents through Good News Clubs, JROTC, and in recovery groups. Pray that we, along with the congregation, will continue to be a bright light shining in an often dark community.
