Thoughts of a cowboy pastor: Should I wear my spurs? I’ll bet they’ll give me a horse that needs ‘em……my feet are going to freeze in cowboy boots…it’s going to be a fun day.
My thoughts fly through a mental checklist as I gear up to go out and help a couple friends move cattle home for calving. It’s going to snow again tomorrow. Yesterday I was standing behind a pulpit preaching the love of Christ. Today is just a different scenario with the same message: I love you because God does.
The life of a cowboy pastor here in the Badlands of South Dakota brings a whole new meaning to Village Missions’ motto “Preach the Word, Love the People.” I find some of my greatest preaching of love can be in cowboy boots.
The Bible says love finds its definition in our great God (1 John 4:8). It is not just a physiological thing. Jesus Christ came to give His life for the love of humanity. St. Valentine believed it was worth giving his life for the sanctity of marriage. Love is the glue of heaven applied to and through us.
As a cowboy pastor I get to drop what I’m doing to respond to a wildland fire or medical emergency because of love for people. I plow snow or help with kids events because that’s what love does. I enjoy sitting in my study and seeking solitude with the Lord, but love compels me to also get out and fix fences, build corrals and preg-check cows. Love is the glue that sticks.
The apostle Paul wrote, “Put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony” (Colossians 3:14 ESV 2011). I am convinced that the more “glue” I use, the more people will come to Christ and be bound together in the completeness God promises. Love is a powerful gift of God.
I’m out trailing cows with a sick calf draped over my lap to say to that rancher, “I love you.” If I verbally told him so I’d leave with a bloodied nose and never be welcome back, but he’ll take a hand in the branding pen.
You may not be a cowboy or a pastor, but God wants to give His love to you. This love is the tangible expression of God’s redemption in Christ—communicated through you. God wants to give you eternal life in Christ Jesus and love that lasts forever. His love is the adhesive attribute that binds us together in perfect unity.
I want you to know: God loves you.
